Featured Questions & Answers from Dr. Marsha Gordon
- Q.
- I find myself in the same predicament every summer. I make a conscious effort to moisturize my skin during the winter to prevent dryness, but the first time I put on shorts my legs still have that scaly look. Is there anything I can do for a quick fix to get my legs in beach shape?
- A.
- It's a challenge to keep skin looking great during the winter months. A great first step is regular, gentle exfoliation. Start with a St. Ives In-Shower Exfoliating Body Polish. There are three rich, sugar-based products to choose from: Collagen Elastin, Mineral Therapy, and Oatmeal Shea Butter. Each has its own delicious scent and leaves your skin feeling smooth and exfoliated. The hardest part? Deciding which body polish to use each morning!
- Q.
- Even though I am careful when it comes to sun tanning, at least once a summer I will inevitably get a sunburn. Is there a special way to take care of skin after this occurs? Should I just continue with my regular exfoliation and moisturization routine?
- A.
- Please, please, please be careful in the sun. The damage you do now lasts a lifetime. My top tips? Avoid midday sun. Cover up. Reapply a broad-spectrum sunscreen frequently. If you find yourself with a sunburn anyway, remember your skin will be fragile. To remedy, take a few days off from your exfoliation routine, and moisturize as often as possible. The new Elements Mineral Moisturizer with SPF 15 from St. Ives is a great face moisturizer for sun-damaged skin. It features a delicious scent - and at an affordable price of $9.99. While you're recovering from your burn, do not pick at the peeling skin, as you may disrupt newly healing skin underneath. Most of all, avoid re-exposure to the sun.
- Q.
- I'll admit it, I wasn't as proactive as I should have been this past year and find myself with some cellulite that I don't want to show off at the beach! Do you have any affordable and simple suggestions for hiding cellulite dimples?
- A.
- Most women have some degree of cellulite, and no one likes it. Studies show that the St. Ives Cellulite Shield Gel Crème and Cellulite Shield Body Moisturizer reduce the appearance of cellulite in most women in two weeks. On a personal note, I've seen improvement myself with daily use of the St. Ives Cellulite Shield Body Moisturizer.
- Q.
- I understand the importance of moisturizing in the winter and do so religiously. However, I don't use facial moisturizer as often in the summer, when I tend to perspire more. What's the rule of thumb for summer moisturization?
- A.
- Summer is unpredictable. You never know when you'll find yourself in an over air-conditioned office or outside in the middle of the day. Because of that, I recommend protecting your skin daily with a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer that includes sunscreen, like the NEW St. Ives Elements Mineral Moisturizer with SPF 15.
- Q.
- My skin gradually becomes oilier as summer approaches. What can I do now to help prevent summer breakouts?
- A.
- Those summer breakouts are likely a result of perspiration-clogged pores. I recommend you start gently exfoliating now in order to improve the appearance of your skin by summer. I like the St. Ives Elements Daily Microdermabrasion. It's gentle enough to use every day, even in winter when some skin types can be more sensitive.
- Q.
- How can I prep my body for the warmer months when I'm baring more of my skin?
- A.
- As a dermatologist, I always remind my patients to make sun protection a priority all year long. But we do bare more skin when temperatures heat up, and summer skirts, shorts and bathing suits come out of our closets. For many women, reducing the appearance of unsightly cellulite is also top of mind. I recommend St. Ives Cellulite Shield Gel Crème and Cellulite Shield Body Moisturizer. The products smell great, and clinical studies have shown their effectiveness.
